The Machine, one of the country's top Pink Floyd tribute bands, will perform at the Ridgefield Playhouse.The New York City-based group formed in the 1980s and continues to tour internationally and eerily recreate the classic Floyd sound. The band performs such hits as "Comfortably Numb," "Another Brick in the Wall," as well as "The Dark Side of the Moon" album in its entirety.We spoke with the band's drummer and founding member Tahrah Cohen as the band traveled from a gig in North Carolina to one in Tennessee. Cohen discussed the band's origins and the challenges and joys of recreating the music of Pink Floyd.
Q: How did the group form?A: The band formed in 1988 and it started very organically. We didn't set out to be one of the country's biggest Pink Floyd shows; we just were doing it because we enjoyed playing the music and then agents started getting involved and we started touring more and more. Then we expanded our touring base from the Northeast and starting touring nationally and then internationally.Q: What drew the band members to the music of Pink Floyd?A: Everyone was a big fan of the band at that time; everyone liked the emotional content,Carbon fiber this, carbon fiber that, you hear this word on an almost daily basis. composite resin are the new wonder material, combining properties of lightness and strength that were here to fore unobtainable, even undreamt of, just decades ago. the musicality and the improvisational elements of Pink Floyd.
Q: What are your live shows like?A: We do a varied set list. We just choose the music that we're most interested in playing on a nightly basis, so if we're not in a mood to play a specific song because we just played it eight times in a row, we won't do it. Our objective is to be really inspired and passionate about our performance. A lot of the older material seems to lend itself to improvising and that's less so for the later albums.
