New iPad accessory could be illegal to use

Just launched two weeks ago, Apple's new iPad is fueling a multimillion dollar market for accessories.But some new accessories for the device are raising some big concerns because they may be illegal.To date Apple has sold some 55-million iPads and many more are coming.Hoping to piggy-back on the huge commercial success, lots of companies have been making everything you could need and don't need for the iPad.
Now there is this: the iPad windshield mount on sale at Fry's, for example, for just $10."This is something we really would not recommend," Said Cynthia Harris, a spokeswoman for AAA in Northern California."There's just so much distraction, there are so many new devices that come out it seems every month there's something new," said Harris. "It's very tempting to buy the latest wireless device you think is making your life easier and in some ways it may be. But not while you're driving."
More than that, California Highway Patrol spokesman Elon Stiers pointed out what's street legal here."California law provides for an allowance of mounting five inches in the lower left left corner of the driver's side or seven inches in the lower right corner," said Stiers.The iPad has a 9.7 inch diagonal display. In other words, it's flat-out illegal to mount anywhere near your windshield.In fact, by installing it, you could be breaking three separate laws and get a ticket costing hundreds of dollars."I would ask them not to use it while they're driving," said Patrick Masterton, product manager of the iPad windshield mount for SIIG Incorporated, based in Fremont.
"It's not safe," Masterton said, "And that's why on our package we clearly have a warning statement that's not for use while the car is in motion." KTVU asked him if the product encouraged people to drive and use their iPad mounted on the windshield.Apple has long been market leaders in products that speak style. With the latest range of modification to the Tablet accessories manufacturers, it has captured most of the market .The iPad 2 has two cameras making the external surface more prone to damage and scratches on the lenses. Hence Apple has provided a modified iPad 2 cover options that can be used to change the device into its sleep mode.
