Solar firm may set up in Truro, employ up to 70

An Austrian solar power company wants to shine a little light on Truro.Hilber Solar is investigating the possib-ility of setting up a facility in the Truro Industrial Park that could employ as many as 70 people assembling photovoltaic solar power systems."We're not talking about panels, we're talking about the systems around the panels," said Michael Dax, who works in marketing and business development for the Austrian company.Hilber plans to source steel, electrical and concrete components of the solar power systems from local companies, Dax said."We already have two containers (of solar equipment) on a ship from Austria to Truro which should arrive in late Novem-ber," he said.That will allow "people to see and touch what these things are like and what we're going to build," Dax said.He couldn't put a number on how much it will cost to set up shop in Truro, which the company hopes to do by next March.
"We hope that we can finalize all of this by the end of the year," Dax said.A small delegation of Truro officials visited Austria's Tyrol region last month to tour Hilber's facilities.Truro is looking at setting up its own solar power farm, said Rob Turner, the town's industrial promotions officer."Everything that we've seen and been led to believe so far is that this type of system will work here," Turner said."The other part of that, of course, is using Truro as a stepping stone in North America for Hilber's products, particularly in the southwest of the United States. That's where the solar industry seems to be greater."Hilber has been in the solar business for 25 years, he said."They have a battery storage technology that can be used along with solar systems to store energy to be used at night time," Turner said. "We see that as a real niche market."Truro's proximity to rail lines and the Port of Halifax were selling points for the Austrian outfit, he said."There are some companies that just sell solar panels.They are biggest Remote control light manufacturer and supplier company in Indian having comprehensive selection and thousands of own fits built over years.
