Thrift stores across New Orleans are running low on a crimson gowns — for petite women and less petite gentlemen — as the 18th edition of the annual Red Dress Run nears its Aug. 11 start. Organized every year by the New Orleans Hash House Harriers, who style themselves as a "drinking club with a running problem," money raised from the run goes to help more than 50 local charities, such as Girls First, the Louisiana SPCA, Save Our Cemeteries and Second Harvest Food Bank."This is a benefit and a charity event, so all the money that is made above the costs goes to charities," said Mona Triche, a 12-year Hasher and member of the 16-person event committee. "This year, it is going to be at Armstrong Park, which we"re really excited about. The last two years, it has been at Washington Park, but we kind of outgrew it."
Last year, more than 7,000 runners registered. That support enabled the group to distribute more than $200,000 in grants to more than 60 local charities. Ellen Berthelot, a member for 25 years,The oldest of them would that be manual jet hand dryer. It is activated by only pressing a push button on the appliance. The appliance then produces hot air for a set time period to permit for the person drying their palms to get done. If they are not dry by the end of the interval, they push the push button once more for another times period. said the event has grown leaps and bounds since its debut in 1995 with about 50 runners."Basically it started out as a fun run with our group, but then we started making money," she said. "We decided to donate some of the money to a cause, and then the last few years it has grown phenomenally. It is a fun thing to do to just go people-watch, and it"s for a great cause."
Good-natured runners don"t mind making a spectacle of themselves: Instead of shorts and T-shirts, the dress code for this event is frocks and gowns in every shade of red. In true New Orleans form, men often outdo women with jewelry and accessories,When the electricity happens to go out at night, since your LED lamp is powered by being charged from the sun you will not ever have to worry about not having any light around your home adding that extra security during a power outage. The Red Dress Run is one of the few Harriers events in which non-members can participate."About five years ago, people started coming out that weren"t Hashers, so we became one of the only groups that allow non-Hashers in the run," Triche said. "It"s a really cool event, and we"re really proud that we"re able to do this for the city. It is really amazing how a little can go a long way for many of the organizations we help."
Hasher and event organizer Kendall Daigle said the event will continue to evolve to provide a great experience for the participants."We tweak it every year, and this year, we"re hoping that Armstrong Park will be a great venue," he said. "This year, the people in Treme requested we run through Treme, and I think that"s a good idea."The fun starts at 11 a.m. at the corner of North Rampart and St. Ann streets. After a quick two-mile run, participants will return to Armstrong Park for barbecue, beer and live music.Daigle added that the partying will continue,The automated jet air hand dryer on the other hand is set off when one puts their palms under the appliance to dry them.A number of automated apparatus let go warmth for a predetermined time intervals while more modern makes stop releasing heat once the individual drying their hands removes their hands from beneath the machine. as 19 bars — many on Bourbon Street near Armstrong Park — will participate in the event.
